the name game

As readers of this blog know, I’ve been working on a white floral scent I’d named Bouquet Blanc months ago. I’d had a link to it on my site until recently, in the “upcoming scents” section. I’ve talked about it a lot here on the blog as I’ve worked on it. Well, I was too slow to finish it because now Le Labo has one called Bouquet Blanc that they are selling through Anthropologie. I guess I’ll need to come up with a new name. Naming is hard and I liked that one, so this is disappointing. That’ll teach me to be quicker about this, lol.

  1. not to worry! you’ll come up with something even better, and, frankly, not to criticize, but: Bouquet Blanc was a little too bland a name for YOUR scents! it has too many delicious angles for such bland nomenclature. i felt it deserved better.

    1. Thanks Jo. Naming is one of the hardest parts. I probably won’t come out with this one until spring anyway, so I’ll have lots of time to think about it. Hard to stop calling it BB in my head though. I’ll have to try theirs sometime and see what it’s like.

  2. Bugger! Drat those Le Labo people… 🙂

Oh well, you’ll come up with something.
Hmm, how about just switching it around a bit, like Blanche Bouquet? Or just Blanche, with it’s ‘Streetcar’ connotations?

    1. Hi Tania,
I’m no expert on the French language, but I think Bouquet is masculine (counter intuitive to many of us) and takes Blanc rather than the form with an e. But yes, I could drop one word or the other and do something different. I’ll have to roll it around in my head a while. thanks!

  3. You’re absolutely right, Laurie, “Blanche Bouquet” would sound awkward to us French people ! “Fleurs” (flowers) are feminine, but “bouquet” is indeed masculine.
Never try and find a reason for it !

And “Blanche” is already a perfume by Byredo…

Let me know if I can be of any help with French names !

    1. Thank you for the offer of help with French names! I will take you up on that, I’m sure!

I thought of a new name I really like for BB but won’t reveal it until the scent is released (this is an English name).

      Many thanks!
